Lighter than expected

This woolen tartan is of high quality and beautifully made. The reason for my critical review is that the fabric is much lighter weight (thinner) than I expected. I ordered 16 oz. fabric and expected heavy weight cloth but received medium weight. According to my research, cloth weight in ounces per square yard is the common standard measurement in the U.S. This tartan was supposed to be two yards long by 54” (a little more than 1/1/2 yards) wide. That equals more than three square yards, so the expected weight was over three pounds (48+ oz.) However, the cloth weighed only two pounds (32 oz.). Doing the math, my tartan weighed less than 10 ½ oz. per square yard, or about 2/3 of the expected weight. A previous order of five (linear) yards was proportionately light. The most logical explanation is that this cloth is advertised by a rather unusual standard of ounces per linear yard, not square yard. You may need to multiply your cloth weight by 2/3 to get a more accurate measure according to commonly accepted standards.
