Product Description

This cane smallpipe chanter reed comes standard in the McCallum smallpipes and folkpipes, but works well in a variety of other makes of smallpipe chanters. It tunes to Concert A at 440 hz and offers a good tuning scale and volume projection.

Give the reed a listen:

Excellent reed. Ordered the Shaw small pipes reed for my McCallum mouth blown set. Absolutely loved the sound and responsive nature of this reed. Excellent customer service and completion of order. Highly recommend this seller!

  3. clean sound

I ordered a couple of these reeds for my McCallum Blackwood Folk Pipes. The shipping was quick and arrived with protective packaging. This reed has a clean tone with a consistent volume (when pressure is maintained correctly). I recommend this reed.

  4. Gorgeous full sound

After having several sets of Small Pipes powered by plastic reeds, it was an absolute delight to get the McCallum Folk Pipes with the Shaw cane chanter reed! The overtones and sound quality are very distinct which lets you know that there is something better than a piece of plastic in your chanter!

I've spent numerous hours playing on this reed to include a solid 4 hour gig of non-stop playing! It still sounds just as good as Day 1!!! I have ordered a 2nd Shaw reed to have as a backup.

The sound this reed produces is warm and rich. Yes, it is quiet, but that is the nature of Small Pipes!

The only downside I have found is that it does take a little bit for the reed to "warm up". I've found that my first strike in is a bit flat. But it does warm up quickly and settles into a solid A=440hz pitch where it will remain for the rest of your session.

  5. Pricey but Necessary

This reed is used in McCallum Folk Pipes. I ordered a back up reed just to have on hand because it is a specialty item. Good thing that I did because the Shaw reed that came with the McCallum Folk Pipes shut off under normal pressure. It is pricey at $45-$65. Be careful when you insert the chanter into the stock as there is very little clearance. The reed has an OK sound, but the volume is low, like that of a PC.
