Product Description
Your J. Higgins Kilt is finely tailored from premium Scottish wool by our own kilt makers here in Kansas City since 1983. Each kilt is carefully crafted from authentic tartans imported from Scotland. Our kilt makers will tailor your kilt to have 3 buckles/straps, belt loops, and double fringe on the front apron. Each kilt is fully lined in the waist. This is a custom garment that cannot be returned. Because we make these kilts to order, please know that delivery is approximately 12 to 14 weeks. This is a general estimate.

MEASURING:
Use only a cloth tape measure when taking kilt measurements. Do not use rulers, or metal tape measures. However, we can copy a current total length if you have an existing kilt already. YARDAGE:
Pricing will change depending on sizes submitted and amount of material needed for the individual. Price ranges are as follows:
7 yard kilt (Hips up to 37") $495
8 yard kilt (Hips 38 to 46") $520
9 yard kilt (Hips 47 to 55") $570
PLEATING:
There are two ways to pleat your kilt in the back. You can either pleat it to the sett so the tartan is shown front and back in the same way, or pleat it to the line so that we choose one line to emphasize which then makes the pleating pattern look completely different than the front. Some tartans don't lend themselves to pleating to the line. We show you an example of both in the photos below using the Royal Stewart tartan. If you're in doubt, we strongly suggest you pleat to the sett as pleating to the line can make a stark difference. First time kilt wearers should maybe avoid pleating to the line.

Beautifully crafted kilt

My kilt arrived today and it is a stunning piece of workmanship. The tartan is perfectly aligned, the stitching is perfect and the fit is awesome. The dimensions and fabric were the result of a number of e-mails between me and John Higgins, who showed great patience and gave great advice for what amounts to a substantial investment. I had been told by many that this was the best kilt maker in the U.S. and cannot argue with that assessment. The whole experience was top notch.

We are so very happy with the beautiful hand made kilt we received. The owner, John, worked with me personally to insure an excellent outcome. The sporran I ordered was absolutely beautiful! Wonderful service, and arrived very quickly in time for the holidays. We highly recommend J. Higgins!

I performed all of the measurements using the website guidance. Mr. Higgins asked me to double check the length as it seemed wrong to him. Darn if he wasn’t right!! My band uses JH for their kilts and I wanted the same quality for my personal kilt. I am very pleased with the quality and turn around time, considering that the material had to be sent from Scotland. I also needed to expedite my order for a gig and JH exceeded my requirements.

I've worn the belted plaid and owned several Pakistani knock offs and even built a couple of kilts myself but nothing compares to the true 8 yard kilt in 16 oz cloth. Quality of materials plus the high level of craftsmanship make this kilt a real family heirloom. Fit was perfect. It swings nice. Price was better than I have seen anywhere else. Materials alone would eat up over half what I paid, never mind the skill involved in building this beauty. These guys know what they're doing! Thanks and expect to receive another order in the near future.

Don't be afraid

Last Aug. I purchased a custom made kilt in the U.K. from a well known kilt maker. I was fitted personally by the tailor. 10 weeks later I received
a beautifully made kilt, except it didn't even come close to fitting properly. 3 weeks ago I ordered another kilt from J. Higgins over the internet. The next day I received a call from John to confirm all the details and specifications of my order. 16 days later I received an absolutely beautiful kilt that fit me perfectly. I will be sending my first kilt to john to have it altered. It's reassuring to know that we have such a fine kilt maker here in the U.S.
