A broken ankle in May this year meant that Simmer, the third DVD in the Reflections of Shetland series, was not the easiest DVD to make.

<P>
How do you capture the true Shetland summer and do it justice whilst being housebound - the particular light and shade playing over the landscape - the colour, energy and spirit of Simmer Dim - the animals, birds and flowers that seem to appear everywhere overnight - the dramatic dawns, endless days and long long evenings?

<P>
The key for me was a visit to Sumburgh Head, where I hopped on crutches onto the cliff-top and photographed the (albeit brief summer visitors) beautiful puffins! Succss! And with that came some summer inspiration.

<P>
I found that being stuck in the garden on a summers day is actually not much of a hardship when you have a decent close-up lens. I photographed a whole new world I never knew existed.

<P>
The music, as always, is an inspiration. Joining Jim Leask on the fiddle were his partner, Bernadette Porter, and Sam McEvoy on the djembe.

<P>
So, here are the results. I sincerely hope you enjoy the films and that they bring a touch of the magic of the Shetland summer.

This DVD is the first in a series of four, based around the Shetland seasons - Winter, Voar, Simmer and Hairst.
</P><P>
This DVD consists of three short films made up of stills and film clips accompanied by beautiful traditional Shetland music.
 </P><P>
We have recorded the music in-house (in croft really!) with the help of Jim Leask, a brilliant traditional Shetland fiddle player.

UK Television, Channel 4, FourDocs Editor wrote about Up Helly Aa A delightful film mostly assembled from stills, but occasionally (and magically) breaking into snatches of movie. It catches the celebrations of the Up Helly (Aa) festival held on the island of Shetland in January every year - a fire festival lasting all night when a replica Viking boat is burned. Great music from the local brass band too.

This is my second DVD and is, I think, my best to date!
</P><P>
I have experimented with various different ideas, including using an evocative Shetland dialect poem, Voar Wadder (Spring Weather).
</P><P>
This DVD encapsulates the true essence of Voar (spring). We had a long, rough winter. Spring came very late and eventually brought with it new colour and life. The Voar film reflects this.

Channel 4, Fourdocs Editor wrote about Whaap (curlew) When the subject of your film is the shy, fast-moving, well-disguised Curlew, a decision to use photographic stills is a brave one. But it works a treat here as a sympathetically edited and lyrical window onto the private life of this beautiful British bird. Good music too!

The Voar DVD has four films, Whaap, Voar, Voar Wadder and Da Street. The accompanying traditional Shetland fiddle music is beautiful and evocative.
